Hell To Pay Delivers Again With Gritty Canterbury Victory
May 28, 2025Hell To Pay made his tenth career start count in fine style on Wednesday, grinding out a determined win in the Benchmark 72 Handicap over 1550m at Canterbury, notching up his second career victory and proving no issue for the rise in trip. With the sting out of the track and a distance rise to test him, the 3YO Hellbent gelding looked right at home under a peach of a ride from 2kg-claiming apprentice Anna Roper. From gate six in a compact field of eight, Roper had the gelding parked nicely in third, just off a genuine tempo set by well-fancied pair Pink Shalala and Colophon. Colophon folded sharply at the top of the lane, but Pink Shalala kept finding—until Hell To Pay loomed ominously at the 200m. Still raw but relentless, he kept grinding away to nab the leader and edge clear late, scoring by 0.55 lengths. “He’s still green and doesn’t quite know how to put a race away,” Roper said post-race. “But there’s definitely more to come, which is exciting.” That view was echoed by co-trainer Tom Charlton, who sees better company on the horizon. “He loves getting his toe into the ground, so a winter Saturday race looks ideal. We’ll look to get him in light and let him keep progressing.” A model of consistency, Hell To Pay has only missed the placings once in ten starts and now boasts prizemoney of $266,334—a figure boosted by his Magic Millions Maiden win earlier this year. Motorboat Steams Home At Albury
May 19, 2025Persistence paid off for connections of Motorboat at Albury on Friday, with the honest mare breaking through for a well-deserved second career win after a campaign plagued by poor draws and a foot abscess. The four-year-old daughter of Astern had been a scratching regular in recent weeks, held back by a string of wide gates. But trainer Danielle Seib’s patience was rewarded when the mare finally came up with barrier one in the Class 1 Handicap over 1175m—and she made full use of it. “We’ve been waiting for the right draw to give her every chance,” Seib said post-race. “She’s not one that can give away a big start—she needs to be up there on speed. She lacks a turn of foot but she’s tough and keeps grinding away.” Sent out a $3.60 favourite, Motorboat lived up to the market expectation, edging out fellow contender Rocket Rudee by 0.19L in a tight finish. The pair spaced the rest of the field, with a 1.42L gap back to third. With Pierre Boudavillain—who has developed a strong rapport with the mare—in the saddle, Motorboat jumped cleanly and landed in the box seat behind a genuine tempo. Wangaratta Walkover For Sea Strike
May 5, 2025The locals roared on Friday as Sea Strike stamped his authority at his home deck of Wangaratta, strolling to a dominant 3.5-length win in the Benchmark 64 over 2000 metres. The handsome son of European turf star Sea The Stars was returning from a strong third at Sandown over 2400m and looked every bit the class horse in the race, despite the drop in trip and lumping 60.5kg. Backed with confidence and delivering accordingly, Sea Strike was throttled down late by jockey Lachlan King, who has now piloted him in all five of his runs this preparation. “He’s just going from strength to strength,” King said post-race. “We’re clicking really well at the moment, and he’s got that classic stayer’s feel—just keeps building. He’s going to give us a lot of fun as he rises in class and tackles longer trips.” Trainer Ben Brisbourne echoed the excitement, eyeing off tougher metro targets after the gelding’s effortless display. “That’s exactly what we wanted to see today—back to country level, back on his home track, and he’s just dominated them,” Brisbourne said. “He’s such a professional—lovely head carriage, great temperament, and he gives you everything when it counts.” With three wins and three placings from just eight starts and over $73,000 in the bank, Sea Strike is beginning to build a tidy résumé as he climbs through the grades.
