It proved a bittersweet afternoon for the connections of Lilac, who delivered a headline result at Tuesday’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, fetching a commanding $1.5 million when secured by Japan’s powerhouse nursery Northern Farm. The dual stakes-winning daughter of Justify was the subject of a spirited bidding duel, eventually knocked down to the famed operation, whose Australian acquisitions include elite mares such as She Will Reign, Funstar and Ruthless Dame.A high-class filly at three, Lilac announced herself with victory in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes at Caulfield during the Spring, before adding further black type in the J B Carr Stakes in the Autumn. She consistently measured up against the best of her generation, finishing third in the Light Fingers Stakes behind Group 1 winners Lady Shenandoah and Lady Of Camelot, and holding her own when fourth in the Group 1 Surround Stakes.Purchased for $300,000 out of the 2023 Karaka Yearling Sale in partnership with Annabel Neasham, Lilac went on to bank in excess of $380,000 in prizemoney. Combined with her seven-figure sale, she has delivered a superb return for her ownership group.Credit is due to Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald for their handling of the mare throughout her racing career, along with the team at Yarraman Park Stud, who presented her in outstanding order for the sale ring.

Ziggy Rose turned promise into performance with a determined victory at Parkes on Sunday, the four-year-old D’Argento mare relishing the rise to a mile after an eye-catching return during the Wagga Carnival. The imposing grey was the subject of strong late support, firming into favouritism for the Class 2 (1600m), and duly justified the confidence with Shaun Guymer producing a positive ride for trainer Danielle Seib. From barrier two, Ziggy Rose settled midfield along the fence off a genuine tempo, though Guymer admitted post-race the pattern wasn’t entirely to script.“She was probably ridden a touch out of her comfort zone, but we had to ride her that way on this track,” he said. “The second favourite didn’t quite take us into it like I’d hoped, so I had to get going a bit earlier than ideal and she probably hit the front sooner than I would’ve liked.”Asked for the effort turning for home, Ziggy Rose responded gamely, holding off a late surge from Strassman to score by a narrow 0.2 lengths. The win was her third from 14 starts and took her earnings beyond $70,000, with the performance suggesting there’s more to come as her preparation unfolds.Trainer Danielle Seib was upbeat about what lies ahead.“I’m looking forward to stepping her up further in trip this prep,” she said. “I think she’ll be even better with a bit of sting out of the ground.”

Wear The Crown completed a winning double for the Champion silks at the Wagga Carnival, producing a determined performance to land Thursday's Class 3 1000m and follow up Spread The Love's Day 1 success. The impeccably bred daughter of I Am Invincible continued her rapid rise, making it three wins from just four starts and underlining her status as a filly of real promise. With Alysha Collett aboard, she jumped cleanly from the inside alley and settled in the box seat in the 10-horse field. The genuine early tempo over the sharp five furlongs didn’t entirely play to her strengths and she was asked for an effort approaching the home bend, but her class came to the fore when it mattered. Digging deep, she lengthened smartly to score by a narrow margin over the closing Cambar. Collett was full of praise post-race.“She’s come back a much stronger filly this time in,” she said. “She’s definitely heading the right way.” Trainer Danielle Seib now looks toward the Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone in search for some very valuable black-type. A $260,000 purchase from the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Wear The Crown is already shaping as an attractive future broodmare. She is out of the multiple stakes-winning Snitzel mare Macroura, a three-quarter sister to Group 1 winner Sunshine In Paris, further enhancing an already deep page.
