Oaks Royalty: Team lands Pierata filly out of Belle En Rouge

Mar 3, 2026

It was a case of quality over quantity for the team at this year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, securing just the one addition to the roster — but what an addition it is. The filly in question, Lot 503, is a superbly bred daughter of Pierata out of the outstanding racemare Belle En Rouge, the 2021/22 New Zealand Filly of the Year. A flagship performer for Te Akau Racing, Belle En Rouge compiled an enviable race record highlighted by victory in the 2022 New Zealand Oaks, alongside a Group 2 and two Group 3 triumphs during her 20-start career. Her exploits on the track were duly recognised in the sale ring when she was purchased by Yulong for $800,000 via Gavelhouse in 2023. This filly is the first foal from the elite mare and represents an enticing blend of proven class and emerging influence. She is by Yulong’s Group 1-winning sire Pierata, a son of Pierro who continues to stamp his stock with athleticism and quality. The page is further underpinned by depth and durability, featuring stakes winner and Group 1 New Zealand Oaks runner-up Filante Etoile, along with three-time Group 1 winner Star Dancer — successful twice in the Auckland Classic. “It’s not often we’re able to secure a filly out of a Group 1-winning mare, so we were naturally thrilled to bring her home,” Director Jason Abrahams said post-purchase. “She has a faultless attitude and, physically, she possesses all the hallmarks of a genuine middle-distance prospect — good length, strength through the body and a lovely, fluent action. “We’ll now send her to Revelwood Farm to commence her early education before mapping out the next stage of her career and selecting a trainer.” In a sale renowned for depth and competition, the team may have signed for just one lot — but on pedigree and presence, this filly shapes as a statement acquisition. For more information, please contact racing@championthoroughbreds.com.au or contact Emma on 04040392680

Hell To Pay Breaks $300K Barrier at Eagle Farm

Feb 19, 2026

Four-year-old Hellbent gelding Hell To Pay pushed his career earnings beyond $300,000 on Wednesday at Eagle Farm Racecourse, recording his third career victory. Now having his third start for trainer Tony Gollan after relocating from Sydney late last year, the gelding was primed for his third-up assignment, with his trainer confident he had reached peak fitness for the campaign. Following a strong second to the consistent Moravia at his previous outing, Hell To Pay started a $2.80 favourite in Wednesday’s Benchmark 70 over 1400 metres. Gollan opted for weight relief, engaging apprentice Jace McMurray and his 2kg claim to reduce the impost to 59kg. Despite drawing wide with the rail out 12 metres, the stable’s instructions were straightforward — be positive from the gates. McMurray rode with intent early, taking the lead where the gelding travelled strongly throughout. He dug deep in the straight to score by a narrow 0.03 lengths over the fast-finishing Influential. The victory was a deserved result for the ownership group, with several members on course to celebrate. Congratulations to Yarraman Park Stud, Kingsport Investments, Sedgewyn, Mr D J Hines, Mr P Hines, Dunbar Family Racing, Mr J E Forker, Mr P C Barnett, Mr S J Brown, Mr J G Codner, Dream Team, Mrs D L Fisher, Mr T S Fisher, Mr C D Hands and Mr W S Simpson.

Oaks Type Filly Purchased From Inglis Classic Sale- Day 1

Feb 8, 2026

Day 1 of the Inglis Classic Sale saw us join forces once again with Annabel and Rob Archibald to secure a standout Pierro filly, out of the Group 1 BRC Oaks–placed Tavistock mare Imperial Lass. She is a half-sister to the accomplished Straight Arron, a multiple Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter, and boasts a pedigree stacked with proven, consistent black-type performers.Offered through the respected Torryburn Stud draft, this filly rated among the very best we inspected at the sale. Physically, she is an impressive individual — blessed with a beautiful head, excellent length and scope, and an unflappable, professional temperament. A mid-November foal, she has plenty of natural improvement still to come, which only adds to her appeal. It’s little surprise she earned the nickname “Princess” among the Torryburn team.Lot 79 Pierro x Imperial Lass Filly BOBS ELIGIBLE INGLIS RACE SERIES ELIGIBLE INCLUDING $100K MAIDEN BONUS CLICK HERE to view her sales page.  Fun fact: the last time we teamed up with Annabel and Rob on a yearling purchase, the result was multiple stakes winner Lilac. We’re quietly hopeful lightning might strike twice with this exciting filly. For more information, contact racing@championthoroughbreds.com.au or contact Emma on 0404392680

Quick Back-Up Pays Off for Gutsy Sea Strike

Feb 2, 2026

It proved a shrewd piece of horsemanship from trainer Ben Brisbourne to back Sea Strike up in Saturday’s $40,000 Woodend Cup at Kyneton, just five days after the Sea The Stars gelding endured a luckless run at Wagga. Having his fourth start of the preparation, the five-year-old stayer was at peak fitness and that edge told late, as he outstayed the $1.90 favourite Luvya Mumma, who enjoyed a significant pull in the weights, conceding 6.5kg to the winner. Regular rider Lachlan King, who has now partnered Sea Strike in all four of his career victories from nine rides, was keen to press on after Wagga, where the gelding was never fully tested after being badly crowded in the straight. Confident the run had not taken its toll, Brisbourne kept a close watch on the gelding through the week and saw no reason not to roll the dice again. Slow into stride, Sea Strike was soon mustered into a handy position just behind the speed, travelling one off the fence. Conscious of the tight Kyneton circuit, King allowed the gelding to build momentum as the tempo lifted, and Sea Strike responded gamely when the pressure was applied. In a determined finish, he proved too strong, grinding his way past the odds-on favourite to score by a narrow but decisive 0.15 lengths. The victory pushed Sea Strike’s career earnings beyond $100,000, now accrued from just 14 starts, and was a deserved reward for connections: Mperezive Racing, Mr R K Sweeney, Mrs T R Sweeney, Mr G C Green, Mr D C Harrop, Mr D H Long, Castagna, Mr P J Dunn, Mr G Seto, Jabradtral, Mr C D Hands, Sedgewyn, Mr T S Fisher, Mr J G Codner, Dream Team, Dr M Healy, 2023 1in5 Club and Mr S Nagaratnam.
