Tavistock x Obey

Tavistock x Obey

By a fast-rising sire, this Karaka yearling purchase is from a highly successful branch of the legendary Eight Carat family.

His sire, Tavistock, was a Champion Sprinter who took the Waikato Draught Sprint (gr. I) and Mudgway Stakes (gr. I), a record that shows him to be the fastest son of the great Sadler’s Wells stallion, Montjeu.

With his first two crops, Tavistock is already sire of including Tarzino, who took both the ATC Rosehill Guineas (gr. I) and Victoria Derby (gr. I); another ATC Rosehill Guineas (gr. I) hero in Volkstok’n’Barrell; Tavago, successful in the ATC Australian Derby; and the sensational Werther, Horse of the Year in Hong Kong, and rated among the top six male turf horses in the world for 2016.

Champion Thoroughbreds’ Tavistock colt is out of Obey, a daughter of multiple Champion Sire and Champion Broodmare sire, Zabeel. Obey is a half-sister to the Avondale JC Concorde Stakes (Gr. II) scorer Taimana.

She is also three-quarters sister to Zabeel’s son, Berlioz, winner of the VRC St. Leger and second in the West Australian Derby (gr. I), and is bred on similar lines to such celebrities as Octagonal, Don Eduardo, Mouawad, and Shower of Roses, all by Zabeel out of Eight Carat, or out of mares descending from her.

This colt’s second dam, Abbaye – a granddaughter of Eight Carat – is half-sister to the mighty champion Danewin, a five-time group one winner, and to group stakes winner and outstanding sire, Commands.

Abbaye is also half-sister to Theme Song, dam of the Waikato RC International Stakes (gr. I) captor Emerald Green; granddam of MRC Caulfield Guineas (gr. I) laureate Shooting To Win; and third dam of Champion and 2016 grade one winner Luna Rossa.

Including the wonderful performers named above, Eight Carat is ancestress of 41 individual stakes winners, 15 of them group one, among them Champion Viscount and group one winner De Beers (both by Tavistock’s broodmare sire, Quest For Fame); group one winners Tristalove and Kaapstad (both by Sir Tristam, the grandsire of this colt’s dam); and group one winners Viking Ruler, Marquise and Diamond Lover.

The cross that produced this colt, that of Tavistock over a Zabeel mare is already responsible for Tarzino, Werther and graded stakes winner Hasselhoof, while Tavistock also sired Tavago out of a mare with a dam by Zabeel.
