Three Chances To Kick Off 2022 On A Winning Note

Champion will be looking to kick off the new year a winner with three chances lining up over the weekend.

Stable stalwart Southern Lad will be the first runner for 2022 when he lines up in the Listed Christmas Classic at Canterbury on Friday night. The 7 year old will be looking to bounce back after his effort in the Falvalon at Doomben last start but the stable are confident he can produce a positive performance following a strong piece of work on Tuesday. The 1200m event has attracted just 7 runners including race favourite Prime Candidate who maps well from barrier 1. Southern Lad has drawn a touch awkward with the outside gate, though connections are hoping the poor barrier will be offset with the booking of champion hoop Hugh Bowman. Bowman partnered Southern Lad for an excellent first-up win this preparation at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day. If Southern Lad can produce a similar effort he will be awfully hard to beat in Friday evening's feature event.

On Saturday, the Champion silks will be represented in two states with Opacity kicking off proceedings at Rosehill Gardens. He's having his first-up run in Race 5, the Petaluma Handicap over 1400m (BM88). The 5YO son of Ocean Park has had two nice lead-up trials and will appreciate the soft track as well as Tom Sherry's 1.5kg claim. The 1400m might be a touch short of his best distance and his record suggests he's much better second-up but he's capable of running a nice race first-up from barrier 3. Chris Waller's runners account for half of the field including race favourite Kingsheir who will carry just 51.5kg after Tyler Schiller's 3kg claim.

Exciting 2YO Hell I Am is having a final bid at gaining a spot in the $2M 2YO Magic Millions feature race when he lines up in the Golden Nugget at the Gold Coast on Saturday. Nash Rawiller, who is the only Sydney jockey riding at the meeting will take the ride from barrier 6 in the field of 10 runners. Hell I Am has opened as second favourite behind the Annabel Neasham trained Swiss Exile who finished 3rd behind MM 2YO race favourite Coolangatta in the Group 3 Bruce Mclachlan a fortnight ago. If Hell I Am can win on Saturday he will take his place in the Magic Millions 2YO feature event a week later back at the Gold Coast.

Best of luck to all connections!
