Southern Lad Set For Cup Day Return

Southern Lad is set to return to the races at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day in the Choisir Handicap over 1100m. He's returned this preparation in fantastic order after a spell over the winter months in QLD. He trialled very nicely on Tuesday over 900m at Rosehill Gardens with Robbie Dolan in the saddle who maintains the ride on race day.

Tuesday's race, worth $150,000 has attracted a small field of 5 runners, headed by top weight Glenall who is dropping back to Open Class company after contesting in stakes races at his last 14 starts. The Hawkes trained Redoute's Choice gelding last contested in benchmark grade in November 2017- defeating the likes of Tactical Advantage and Ziggy Willie.

Southern Lad will get in well at the weights- carrying just 51.5kg's after Robbie Dolan
's claim- this is 10kg's less than what he carried first-up last preparation when finishing 3rd at Randwick, beaten just 0.4L over 1000m. Trainer John O'Shea is looking forward to getting Southern Lad back to the races "He's in great order and looks set for a good preparation- he'll take natural improvement off whatever he does on Tuesday given he's had just one trial but i still expect a competitive effort from him".

Good Luck to his owners!
