Southern Lad Salutes At Just Second Career Start

Promising Ocean Park 3 year old Southern Lad notched up his first win at just his second career start when taking out the TAB.com.au Maiden Handicap over 1250m in convincing fashion on Friday night at Canterbury. In the field of six horses, rider Tye Andland was neutral out of the gates and settled second last in the run. He wobbled and changed strides coming around the home turn but showed his exciting turn of foot to pick up the field and go on to win by 2L.

"He's still learning but he's definitely a very nice horse on the up". commented Tye post-race. Southern Lad had indicated to the stable that he had above average ability with two very nice trials leading into the race. "The key with Ocean Park's progeny is to give them time, they are much better as three year olds and this gelding is the classic example of that" commented John O'Shea after the win. "He's a nice horse who we can work through the grades and potentially find a nice race over the autumn".

Southern Lad is a half brother to well performed stablemate Kuro. He was purchased for $75,000 from the Bhima Stud draft at the Inglis Easter Sale in 2016. He is raced by a fantastic group of owners Champion Thoroughbreds, Mr J N Allen, Mperezive, Mr G C Green, Mrs J S Willis, Mr B Quinlan, Mr J A Denny, Mr S Bunt, Mr S Thatcher, Mr D H Long, Mr G R Tomlinson, Mr R M Farrar
