Southern Lad Earns Another Stakes Placing For Connections

Southern Lad maintained his excellent first-up record when finishing 2nd in the Listed Razor Sharp Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. It was his second stakes placing after finishing behind subsequent Everest winner Classique Legend in the June Stakes during the winter.

Jumping from barrier 2, Southern Lad held his position on the rail in the box seat. The Gary Portelli trained Space Boy ensured a good tempo throughout with race favourite Athiri sitting outside him in the lead. Southern Lad got into clear running around the home turn easily enough but was unable to gun down the Godolophin trained Athiri who was carrying just 53kg. He went on to defeat the third horse, Tactical Advantage by over a length.

Southern Lad, who was a $75k purchase from the 2016 Inglis Easter Sales has now earned over $400,000 in prizemoney from 26 career starts. He will now head to the Listed Christmas Classic which will be run on New Year's day at Canterbury over 1200m. If he can reproduce Saturday's effort, he should be right in the mix again.
