Drop Back To Benchmark Grade For Southern Lad on Saturday

The last time Southern Lad contested in Benchmark grade was 9 starts ago, when he won a Benchmark 94 over 1200m at Randwick in January 2020. On Saturday, he'll line up in the Benchmark 88 at Rosehill Gardens over 1200m (Race 9 @ 6:15pm) as the top weight in the field of 11 runners. With the allotted weight of 62kg, apprentice jockey Chris Williams will give Southern Lad a 2kg relief from the awkward draw of barrier 9.

Lightly raced Masked Crusader is the short priced favourite in the field for team Hawkes. The 4YO son of Toronado has drawn barrier 6 and will carry 4.5kg less than Southern Lad. Masked Crusader was touted as the next big thing following 3 dominant wins in succession early in his career before a somewhat disappointing preparation last time in. He has trialled very nicely heading into the Rosehill race first-up suggesting he could be back to his best.

Southern Lad is arguably over the odds, opening up as a $26 chance. With the forecast for rain and his decent wet record along with the drop back in grade, he should be most competitive in a race that looks to have good speed on paper. Although he'll have to get back in the field from the draw, if the track allows horses to make up ground, he should be considered an excellent each-way chance.

Best of luck to his owners!
