Black Type Hope For Newsreader

Newsreader is the only maiden filly heading into the Listed Reginald Allen Stakes at Randwick on Saturday but the 3YO daughter of Press Statement is a great chance of earning some black-type in a wide-open race. Newsreader has been crying out for 1400m and gets her chance on Saturday following a last start 3rd placing over 1250m on the Kensington track after bombing the start where jockey James Mcdonald was adamant she would've been in the finish without the mishap. "She just got too far back on a track where we needed to be up near the lead" Mcdonald commented after the run.

With just 53kg allotted to Newsreader on Saturday, Glen Boss will take over the reins and was very pleased with her gallop on Tuesday leading into the race. "She gave me a really nice feel, and although she's still a maiden, she's working like she should be competitive against her own age and sex on Saturday." Newsreader has drawn barrier 2 in the field of 12 runners and hopefully she can begin well and take a closer position in running.

If she can finish on the podium on Saturday, it'll add some much desired residual value for her owners once she has finished racing. She's the first foal out of Group 1 placed mare Thinking Of You, who finished 3rd in the Flight Stakes behind First Seal and Champion mare Winx as a thee year old. Thinking Of You has been given every chance at stud, she has a two year old colt named Governor by I Am Invincible who is in training with Team Hawkes. She also has a yearling colt by Zoustar and was served by Dundeel last year.

Also representing the team on Everest Day at Randwick is Opacity. He lines up in The Star Mile with Robbie Dolan in the saddle, carrying just 52kg from barrier 3 with the addition of the blinkers for the first time. "I've had the blinkers up my sleeve for a while, and after racing a little dour last start, I've elected to put them on Saturday and his work in them on Tuesday was excellent" commented trainer John O'Shea this week. A step up in distance would have been ideal this start, however with no options over further for another couple of weeks the stable is relying on the blinkers to sharpen him up for his third consecutive run over the mile this preparation.

Best of luck to the connections of both Newsreader & Opacity!

Race To Race Double for Champion & O'Shea

Scone's Tuesday meeting proved to be rich pickings for the team with a race to race double. First cab off the rank was Smokeshow in the F&M Maiden Plate over 1100m. She overcame the testing conditions to notch her first win from her third career start.

Two Good Chances Head To Scone

Champion has two runners heading to Scone's Tuesday meeting which has attracted healthy field sizes. Kicking off proceedings for the team is 3YO Winning Rupert filly SMOKESHOW. She's coming of an unlucky 6th last start at Hawkesbury in a very competitive maiden which wouldn't of looked out of place at a midweek metropolitan meeting.
