Lion's Roar

A winner on debut as a 2YO, Lion's Roar has always promised to be a tough, honest racehorse. From just 3 career starts (as of September 2020) he has notched two careers wins and a second placing behind the promising Mo'Unga.

Lion's Roar was purchased for $65,000 from the 2018 Karaka Yearling sale from the Wellfield Lodge draft. He was selected by Champion's director Jason Abrahams and John O'Shea who trained his father Contributer for two Group 1 wins (Ranvet Stakes & Chipping Norton). "I liked Contributer's progeny at the sales and this bloke really reminded me of his sire, so to get him for $65,000 was just a bonus" commented O'Shea at the time of his purchase.

Contributer was a Champion miler who was slightly unusual. As Champion jockey James McDonald said “He had the speed of a sprinter and the stamina of a stayer. When I need that speed I asked for it and he delivered. He really was a phenomenal horse to ride”.

His dam, Minnaleo, is a four times winner and half-sister to Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed VAQUERA. Also in the family is dual Group 1 winner and boom first season sire, PRESS STATEMENT along with Group 1 winners PRESSDAY and THE MIGHTY LIONS. The Mighty Lions was a super strong race mare and a good producer.
