Lion's Roar Kicks Off Spring Campaign In Tramway

Group 1 Randwick Guineas Winner Lion's Roar kicks off his spring campaign when he lines up in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes over 1400m at Randwick tomorrow. The race has produced a field of 10 runners for the $200,000 event which includes Group 1 Doomben Cup winner & race favourite Zaaki.   

Race To Race Double for Champion & O'Shea

Scone's Tuesday meeting proved to be rich pickings for the team with a race to race double. First cab off the rank was Smokeshow in the F&M Maiden Plate over 1100m. She overcame the testing conditions to notch her first win from her third career start. 

Two Good Chances Head To Scone

Champion has two runners heading to Scone's Tuesday meeting which has attracted healthy field sizes. Kicking off proceedings for the team is 3YO Winning Rupert filly SMOKESHOW. She's coming of an unlucky 6th last start at Hawkesbury in a very competitive maiden which wouldn't of looked out of place at a midweek metropolitan meeting. 

Coffs Harbour Cup In Opacity's Sights

Opacity will head north for Thursday's $150k Coffs Harbour Cup which has attracted a field of 13 runners for the 1600m feature event. The 5YO son of Ocean Park will have to carry the top weight of 61kg as the highest rating horse in the field. 

New Heights Reached In The 2020/21 Season

Champion Thoroughbreds has achieved one of the most successful seasons to date since the company’s 2009 inception. Overall Champion completed the 2020/21 season with 79 runners (15 individual runners) for 12 winners (8 individual winners) and 20 placegetters with a win strike rate of 15% and place rate of 41%. The 20/21 season has also seen Champion achieve it’s highest prize money won to date 

King Of Spades Digs Deep On Debut

King Of Spades had to overcome testing conditions to notch up a debut win at Nowra on Monday. The 2YO son of Xtravagant found himself in a four horse field for the 1200m Colts and Geldings maiden event on a Heavy 9 surface. He settled at the rear of the field from barrier 2 and settled well throughout the run. 

Further Boost To Sydney Spring Carnival

Racing NSW has announced that a new race – “The Invitation”, will be run in October 2021, headlining several enhancements to the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. “The Invitation”, carrying prizemoney of $2 million, will be run for fillies and mares over a distance of 1400m at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 23 October 2021. The field for “The Invitation” will exclusively comprise 12 starters invited by a panel convened by Racing NSW. 

Southern Lad Breaks Drought With Stakes Win

It had been more than 500 days since Southern Lad had been in the winners circle when saluting at Randwick in January 2020 but he made a fashionable return when taking out the Listed Ramornie Handicap at Grafton on Wednesday. It was a well deserved first stakes victory for the 6YO son of Ocean Park who has been a model of consistency throughout his career. 

Northbound Lad Tackles Ramornie

Southern Lad is out to crack the half a million dollar mark in prize money earnings when he lines up in the Listed Ramornie Handicap at Grafton on Wednesday. Currently sitting on $490,000, a podium finish will see him reach the prize money milestone at career start number 32.  

Opacity Makes A Brilliant Return To The Winners Circle

Opacity returned to his brilliant best at Royal Randwick on Saturday in the Racing To Win Handicap over a mile. All the stars aligned and he found himself with a good barrier draw, a soft track and just 51kg's after apprentice Reece Jones' claim. umping from barrier 4, Opacity began well to settle 3 pairs back off the fence 

Conditions To Suit Opacity At Randwick On Saturday

Opacity is due for a change of luck and Wednesday's barrier draw could be an indication that the change is on it's way. He lines up in the Racing To Win Open Handicap over 1600m at Randwick on Saturday where he maps to get a nice run from barrier 4 in the field of 13 runners with in-form apprentice Reece Jones claiming down to the very light weight of 51kg. 

Bravo, Bravado!

It was a 'watch with one eye closed' effort from Bravado in the last of the day at Scone's feature meeting on Friday when he came from the clouds to record his second career win in a class 2 over 1300m. Drawn the widest gate, Bravado was near last on the home turn, some 10 lengths off the leader 

Newsreader Tackles Denise's Joy Stakes First-up

3YO filly Newsreader will line up in the Listed Denise's Joy Stakes at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday in a bid for some valuable black-type. The daughter of Press Statement is first-up following two nice trials at Randwick and Warwick Farm in preparation for the stakes assignment. 

Southern Lad Returns To Wagga Carnival With Some Unfinished Business

It was described as 'the one that got away' last year when Southern Lad finished 2nd in the Wagga Town Plate when having a luckless run on a Heavy 8 track. And with trainer John O'Shea confident he's in better form this year than last, he's hoping he can go one better in the $200,000 event 

Weekend Runners Preview

Champion will be represented by two runners on Saturday, May 1st. Lightly raced three year old filly Alura looks well placed in Race 6 at Newcastle- a maiden plate over 1200m for the fillies and mares. The daughter of I Am Invincible has trialed well on two occasions leading into the first-up run on Saturday 

Great Turnout At 2021 Yearling Parade

It was a brisk Autumn morning at John O'Shea's Randwick stables on Sunday, however the sun was shining and the coffee was brewing which drew a good crowd to our 2021 Yearling Parade. 6 yearlings were paraded for the crowd plus 9 racehorses currently in work at the stable, headlined by Lion's Roar who enjoyed photo opportunities 

Third For Lion's Roar In Derby

Lion's Roar certainly gave his connections something to cheer for when coming up the Randwick rise in Saturday's Australian Derby. The son of Contributer who was tackling the 2400m journey for the first time was given an excellent steer from jockey Brenton Avdulla to get him 1 off the fence just worse than midfield from barrier 13 in the field of 16 runners. The temp was good throughout and Lion's Roar travelled beautifully throughout the run. 

Barrier 13 For Lion's Roar In The Australian Derby

Lion's Roar has been unable to draw inside barrier 10 for his past two Group 1 assignments and the trend continues with the 3YO son of Contributer drawing gate 13 for the Australian Derby at Randwick on Saturday. The field has attracted 16 runners, with the well fancied Montefilia being the only filly in the race taking on the males

Wild Sydney Weather Forces Carnival Delay

Racing NSW and the ATC issued a combined Media Release early Saturday detailing plans for the carnival following the postponement of Golden Slipper Day. Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club have determined that all race meetings forming part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival will be run seven days later than originally scheduled. 

Luck Swings Bizou's Way At Goulburn

After what can only be described as a luckless preparation, Bizou returned to the winner's circle at Goulburn on Thursday, nosing out the short-priced favourite Crazy Train in a photo finish in the Benchmark 58 over 1600m.  

Lion's Roar Scores Group 1 Randwick Guineas

Lion's Roar caused somewhat of an upset in Saturday's Group 1 Randwick Guineas with a brainstorming win against a talented bunch of 3YO's over the mile. Drawn awkwardly, Brenton Avdulla opted to ride him conservatively at the rear of the field. Travelling strongly throughout, Brenton tracked into the run behind race favourite Aegon and quickly swooped past him in the straight.

Lion's Roar is looking to go one better in Group 1 company on Saturday when he lines up in the Randwick Guineas for the 3YO's over 1600m. He's up against an array of talent in the field of 13 runners including the undefeated Aegon who is already a Group 1 winner in New Zealand.

Lion's Roar Tackles Hobartville Stakes First-up

Promising three year old gelding Lion's Roar kicks off his autumn campaign on Saturday in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes over 1400m. The race has produced a field of 13 quality runners under the set weight conditions. Headlining the field is the unbeaten kiwi galloper Aegon (Sacred Falls) who won the Group 1 NZ Guineas last year followed with a victory in the Karaka Millions 3YO race in January.  

Newsreader Gives Rivals Galloping Lesson At Warwick Farm

Promising 3YO filly Newsreader backed up her impressive Magic Millions Maiden win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday when blitzing her rivals by 2.8 lengths. The daughter of Press Statement sat 3 wide, without cover on speed but never looked in doubt with top jockey James McDonald in the saddle.

Racing NSW Announce Additional BOBS Bonus Incentives

Racing NSW this week announced that its BOBS Scheme will be enhanced by the addition of a Platinum and Gold Category. Commencing from January 2020, selected races will have a BOBS Platinum bonus of $100,000 or a BOBS Gold bonus of $50,000, offered for the winners of the race.

Press Statement Off And Running With Early 2YO Trial Winner

The whispers at the track have been very positive about exciting first season sire Press Statement and this was backed up with a promising debut trial effort from 2YO Press Start at the Gold Coast this week. The filly, out of Testa Rossa mare Rossarita won the trial by an impressive 2.3 lengths over the 900m journey.

Sometimes stories just like this make you smile... While chatting to his dad, Dave, young Lachlan O’Neill, stated that he was a bit down on his luck. Now Dave and his wife Elizabeth, who own shares in Bonita Bella, Enamour, The Champion One in Five Club and Mai Time, decided that their beloved young offspring needed a little help. Champion Celebrate 10 Years In Style

Despite being a very windy evening, in Sydney, on Saturday night a good 130-strong group, of past and present owners, assembled at The Museum of Contemporary Art to celebrate 10 years since Champion Thoroughbreds was established. 

The Lads That Look Like Their Dads

I inspected our Contributer ex Minnaleo colt and our Toronadoex ex Chabaud  colt. I was pleased to see how well they were doing.  Both colts really impressed me being such terrific physical types and what really stood out is how much they are looking like their sires. 

Bonita Bella Puts On Show For Owners

Cracking 2 year old So You Think filly, Bonita Bella, puts on a show for her owners on Saturday morning at Trackwork. "She certainly has plenty of spunk about her" said John O'Shea.

Promising Hinchinbrook gelding Kandinsky produced a solid debut win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday in the Hyland Race Colours Plate over 1200m. Given the perfect ride by Brenton Avdulla, Kandinsky was able to use the soft draw to his advantage and settle just behind the leaders where he then gave a good kick around the home turn to go on and win by 0.3L under little pressure on the line. It was a good effort by the 3yr old who was coming off a nice barrier trial at Rosehill on October 27th over 900m.

We're off to Warwick Farm on Wednesday with two Champion representatives lining up with solid chances in their respective races. Kandinsky (Hinchinbrook x Artistique) kicks off proceedings in the Hyland Race Colours Maiden Plate over 1200m (Race 2 @ 2:20pm). The unraced 3yr old is coming off a nice barrier trial at Rosehill on October 27th where he found the line nicely under little pressure over 900m. 

Frankincense In Search Of Maiden Victory At Cranbourne

Frankincense is Cranbourne bound on Friday to line up in the Botanic Homes 3YO Maiden Plate over 1300m. He's coming off an unlucky fourth last start when struggling to find room in the straight and not being fully tested to finish 1.25L behind the winner at Seymour on October 18th.  

The Girls Team Up For Randwick Success

Melbourne Cup day proved to be one for the girls, not only at Flemington but also at Randwick. Sheilarized broke her maiden in tough style when partnered by Kathy O'Hara in the Quayclean Handicap over 1400m. A solid effort by the 3 yr old filly who was one of two in a field of 10 who still held maiden status heading into the race.  

Sheilarized Off To Randwick On Cup Day

If you can't have a runner at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day, then what better way to spend the big day than in the owner's enclosure Randwick? Sheilarized (Authorized ex Street 'em Sheila) will represent the team tomorrow when she lines up in Quayclean Handicap over 1400m (Race 2 @ 11:40pm). This will be the 3yr olds fourth career start where she is coming off a nice 2nd at Hawkesbury in a 1300m Maiden. 

Ekklestone Kicks Home At Gosford

Ekklestone (Darci Brahma x Rapid Kay) broke his maiden in good style yesterday under the guidance of Jockey Brenton Avdulla in what was a much deserved victory for the 5 year old. It has been a slow and steady process with this lightly raced gelding, with patience playing a big part in his winning effort on Thursday. This was just his 5th career start and he now boats a win, two seconds and two thirds in provincial grade. 

City Chance Beckons For Zoltar

4yr old Zabeel gelding Zoltar will attempt to break his maiden in city company on Wednesday when he lines up in the 1st Pierro Yearlings 2016 Plate over 1900m (Race 1 @ 1:55pm). Zoltar is coming off a last start 3rd at Gosford over the mile and the step up to this distance on Wednesday looks ideal 

Diamond Oasis Has Moonee Valley In His Sights

Seasoned sprinter Diamond Oasis heads south on Saturday when he lines up in the Jeep City Handicap over 955m at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day. This is Diamond's second start this preparation after a tough first-up run when finishing 4th at Warwick Farm over 1100m.  

Canterbury Calls For Butterboom

Butterboom heads to the first night meeting in NSW this season at Canterbury on Friday night where she lines up in Schweppes Handicap over 1250m at 9:00pm. The 4 year old mare by Myboycharlie (IRE) has had 4 starts this preparation for 2 wins and a second. Last start she finished 7th at Warwick Farm when stepping up to 1400m where she didn't appear to appreciate the one week back up after winning on a Heavy 8 over 1200m at Kembla.
